About

8th Street Pets & Vets is a Saskatoon-based primary care veterinary practice founded on a patient-first, progressive medicine approach.

Our Mission

Our medicine is modern and forward-thinking and designed to meet your needs as a client who wants the best for your furry family member.

About Us

The clinic was established in 2023 by Dr. Cemaine Tsang and tells the story of her wish list for what community veterinary practice can offer. The clinic is built on the patient-centred model, which brings together wellness care, elective and routine surgery, dentistry, chronic disease management, emergency care, and pharmacy in one space and under the care of one consistent team that knows you and your pet from the moment you walk through our doors.

We strive to bring you our personal best and the highest standards of modern veterinary care.  We believe that listening to you the client is the basis to understanding the needs of your pet.  This care and consistency in service is what sets us apart at 8th Street Pets & Vets.

  • Dr. Cemaine Tsang

    Veterinarian/Owner

Cemaine’s love for science and animals developed at a young age when her scientist father brought home an assortment of pet rabbits, pigeons, river bass, and geese. She obtained a BSc in Immunology at McGill in Montreal, then moved to Saskatoon for her Masters in neurology at the University of Saskatchewan (UofS). Her PhD in Immunology and Vaccinology was completed at the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) where she researched fetal immunization and DNA vaccines. It was during her time at VIDO that she was introduced to the world of veterinary medicine and surgery, and this led to obtaining a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. For the past 14 years, she has practiced veterinary medicine in Saskatoon, Regina, northern Alberta, and at non-profit pop-up clinics around the province. She is a faculty member and former head of the province’s Veterinary Technology Program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and a sessional lecturer in the School of Public Health at the UofS. These experiences have led to the creation of 8th Street Pets & Vets, a clinic built on teamwork, communication, and comprehensive patient-centred care.

Cemaine and her family have finally completed renovations to their 100-year-old home. This home is currently ruled by Marvelous Maxine (aka Maxine the Malevolent), the 18-year old crusty toothless Chihuahua who rules Boo (Lagotto). Maxine owns Dwight (the husband who is often seen helping out at the clinic), and tolerates the kids. ‍

  • Dr. Kathryn Carmalt

Dr. Kathryn graduated from the Western College Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 2015. She left sunny California and came to Saskatoon to complete a Master’s degree in Toxicology. She then went on to complete her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Since becoming a veterinarian, Kathryn has taught Anatomy at the vet college, conducted research on equine laminitis, and found a love in small animal medicine and general surgery. She continues to mentor future veterinarians at various teaching clinics around the province, including Canine Action Project and CatSNIP.

Bio to come. (It’s long overdue as Liam has been with the clinic since our first winter!). A sneak peek: Liam is the cat and dog whisperer and we haven’t quite figured out his secret but hope he will share with us one of these days. Liam holds down the fort on weekends and helps to manage our Sunday emergency service.

She has worked at the National Center for Animal and Plant Health (CENSA) in Mayabeque, Cuba. Aleli has many veterinary interests. One of her key focus areas is post-operative patient care and recovery to ensure that every cat and dog has the best outcome possible in their post-operative and trearment period. In her spare time, Aleli watches anime and soccer – “Go Real Madrid FC!” – and spending time with her family. She’s an amateur aquascaper and professional Betta fish breeder.
